| Project: Signature Engineering Building | Date: 10/18/11 | ||||
| Contractor: Gilbane | |||||
| Client: Virginia Tech | |||||
| Project Scope/Method of construction: This building "will be approximately a 160,000 gross-square-foot facility to include classrooms, instructional laboratories, research laboratories, and offices for multiple departments and programs for the College of Engineering."From the information I was able to find, this project has an expected budget of $80+ million dollars | |||||

| Is equiptment close? Yes, with parking already being limited on tech campus, the contractors needed to use as little extra parking as possible. Therefore all the equipment is relatively close to everything. | |||||
| Are there idle workers? None that can be seen. The only workers I saw were two that walked into one of the trailers, 4 that were burying electrical lines, two operating two backhoes, and one opperating a dump truck. | |||||
| Construction Activities: Four guys were burying new electrical lines. One backhoe seems to be scooping dirt from a pile and filling a dump truck, and the other backhoe is digging some kind of hole. | |||||
| Does safety seem to be of importance? There is not a lot happening on this job site today, and what is happening is far away, however all the men that I could see and talk to were all wearing their protective gear (vest, long pants, boots, hard hat, gloves, glasses). Also the main project is walled off completely to the public and the little side job has an orange plastic fence going all the way around it. | |||||

| Activity | Hazard | Solution | |||
| Digging and working right beside a busy sidewalk | Students aren't as mindful about | putting up fences and cones to steer traffic | |||

| Comments/Remarks: There was not a lot going on however the project is starting to develop and it looks as though the drilling for the caissons has begun. I asked the four guys working on the electrical lines whether or not it was part of the engineering project or if what they were doing was something for the parking deck and it was in fact for the new construction. | |||||
